The Play in a Day Programme

A Play in a Day gives the opportunity for pupils from Year 5, 6 or 7 to work with a professional theatre director over the course of one day to create a short piece of theatre.

The plays are based on National Curriculum topics and use many different theatrical techniques including choral speaking, mime, physical theatre and ensemble work.

At the end of the day there is a 15 minute performance for parents and the rest of the school.

These days aim to develop:

·               awareness of others and a sense of teamwork

·               understanding about a new topic, or consolidation of  knowledge on a topic already covered

·               individual self confidence and sense of achievement

·               theatre skills in a fun and relaxed atmosphere!

The plays are very accessible to those for whom English is not a first language and for those with reading difficulties, as scripts are not used and lines are learned orally.

These plays can be created with a single class or a whole year group (3 classes).

Topics

Since we can write them to order, plays can be created to tie in PSHE, Healthy Eating Awareness, Citizenship, Geography, RE, Science or almost anything else you can think of!

Plays can also explore themes such as bullying, peer pressure or helping one another out.  Some popular titles include:

·          The Victorians

With bobbies and bustles, railways and the good Queen herself, this is a fun and pacy introduction to Victorian Britain.

·          The History of Music: Big Bang to Boy Band

From cavemen through clavichords, to Westlife at Wembley – this is a flight through time looking at music through the ages.

·          What’s in My Backyard?

An entertaining exploration of the environment, habitats and food chains with Mouse, Millipeed and Mole – all in your local garden!

·          Not on My Team!

This exciting sports based play looks at bullying and the ways that actions affect ourselves and others.

·          A Holiday in the Country

An informative and funny history of the Second World War, all seen through the eyes of a 10 year old evacuee.

Several schools have also found the performance a useful way of including parents in week long programmes such as Science Week, Book Week, Health Week or Arts Week.

Please call us to challenge us with a new topic!

Requirements

With one class taking part, we will need one large hall available all day.  We can move to a classroom for a short time if the hall is needed during lunch.

For one year group (3 classes) taking part, we will need 2 large spaces all day.  Again, moving for lunch is possible.

With a whole year group (3 classes), we suggest one class will work for a full day on the play, and two classes will work on the play for half a day each.   Alternatively all three classes could work for two sessions each.

Staff Involvement

We welcome teachers getting involved and are more than happy for them to join in.  No theatre skills or experience are needed.  On the other hand, if it would be of benefit to teachers to use the time in other ways, all our staff are fully CRB checked and are happy to lead the sessions alone.

Icon Theatre

We believe theatre helps young people understand how imagination leads to positive change.

We run an assortment of theatre activities, including teaching sessions and workshops in schools, weekly community classes, the Play in a Day programme and annual touring theatre productions.

This year, we will bring interactive drama projects and workshops to nearly 2000 young people across Britain.

Please see our home page for more information.

Our Staff

All our Play in a Day leaders are professional directors or actors who are also trained in delivering arts education.  They are also fully CRB checked.
