Class Information
Drama (ages 7 - 11) Level 1
Weekly classes build self confidence through theatre skills such as acting and improvising. Includes short scripts, structured scenes, language development, movement based theatre, confidence and projection and - once a year - a full production at a professional theatre venue.
Drama (ages 12 - 19) Level 2
Explores drama through scripts, improvisation, characterisation, ensemble work, projection and stage technique. Classes lead to a full production each year at a professional theatre venue, and students develop social skills and confidence for use in all areas of life. Performing arts careers advice is also available.
Street & Jazz Dance (ages 7 - 19)
Improve co-ordination and physical fitness through a range of routines, techniques & stretches using current pop music, R&B, musical numbers and street funk. Sessions build confidence, physical ability and ease of movement - and all dances are performed in the end of year show at a professional venue.
What kind of students attend?
We find that there are, very generally, two types of student who enjoy our classes. Firstly, there are young people who simply enjoy acting and developing their theatre and dance skills. Some of these are naturally very exuberant, but we also have students who are shyer and less confident. Many of these young people find our classes a relaxed way to develop and build up their communication skills and self esteem.
The second type of student tends to be in our older class and is often preparing for a professional career in the performing arts, either as a performer or in the associated fields. For these students, we can offer advice on finding agents, developing a CV, focusing on the types of role that may lead to professional work, and exploring the many different types of theatre that are out there.
Icon Theatre School is a part of Icon Theatre, a professional national touring company that specialises in movement based theatre. Although the school has a broad curriculum and teaches many different types of theatre and dance, we find our connection with the theatre helps to keep our performances and our work energised and alive. We believe theatre is a living art, and constantly update our work and our classes in the light of professional contemporary theatre practice.
